These chairs are a variation on the model designed for the showrooms of the Fine Art Society, New Bond Street, London in 1887. The model was not exclusive to the Fine Art Society, as another version was used in his own studio at Stamford House in Altringham along with other variations in existance.
The leg turnings differ on each chair otherwise they are the same, and display some very fine carving. A table and chair were purchased brand new by the Osterreichisches Museum fur angewandte Kunst. A coal scuttle resides in Manchester City Art Gallery.
Along with many public commissions, G. F. Armitage had extensive private commissions for furniture and decoration, see appendix 2 of Rosamond Allwood's article in the Furniture History Society journal XXIII, 1987, for a list of private clients from 1892-1897.
