Who was George Walton ?

George Walton (1867-1933) 

Walton attended art classes whilst working as a bank clerk. George Walton & Co was established in Glasgow in 1888 as a result of a commission to decorate a new smoking room in one of Miss Cranston's tea rooms. In 1896 he was commissioned again from Miss Cranston to decorate her Buchanan St premises for this he collaborated with Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Despite having no formal architectural training he built many houses including The Leys, Elstree in 1901 for J. B. B. Wellington. In 1989 Walton was commissioned to redecorate the showrooms of Kodak in London, Glasgow, Brussels, Milan and Vienna. 

George Walton designed furniture for J. S. Henry (retailed through Liberty) with designs from some commisions being made by William Birch Ltd of High Wycombe, wallpapers for Jeffrey & Co, textiles for Alexander Morton and glass for James cooper's 'Clutha' range.
