Owen Jones (1809-1974)
He served an apprenticeship with Lewis Vuillamy and then extensively toured Europe the Middle East and Turkey with fellow Architect Jules Goury.
He produced comprehensive drawings of the Alhambra and subsequently Published the ground breaking Plans, Elevations, Sections, and Details of the Alhambra in 1842.
His most famous book was published in 1856. The Grammar of Ornament catalogued design details from across the world. This systematic approach to design changed the way everyday items were designed. He revolutionised the design process.

He produced calendar, diaries and playing card designs for De La Rue. He designed Silks, wallpaper and carpet designs that were manufactured exclusively for Jackson & Graham. His silk designs were manufactured by Warner & Ramm wallpapers by Jeffrey & Co, John Trumble and Townsend & Parker. Mosaic flooring was made by Wyatt & Parker and L. M. Blashfield. He designed tiles for Maw & Co and biscuit packaging for Huntley & Palmer
He died in April 1874. In May 1874 an emergency committee was convened to produce an exhibition of his life works in conjunction with the 1874 London International Exhibition. The exhibition was intended to pay tribute to the man considered most responsible for improving British design. Those committee members were Charles Barry, Henry Brassey M.P., John Brinton, William Burges, Henry Cole, Alan Summerly Cole, Charles Collard, John Gregory Crace, Warren De La Rue F.R.S., W.W. De La Rue and Dr Christopher Dresser.
