Sir Robert William Edis (1839-1927)

He set up his London architectural practice in 1861. He was president for the Architectural Association for two years from 1865 to 1867. He was elected ARIBA in 1862 and FRIBA in 1867. He was knighted in 1919 for his military services.

His early career was based on Gothic but later changing with Edward William Godwin to Queen Anne Revival and the Aesthetic Movement.

His works include The Great Central Railway Hotel Marylebone, Victoria Mansions and additions to Sandringham for Edward VII.

1881 saw him publish Decoration and Furniture of Town Houses. In 1884 he published ‘Healthy Furniture and Decorations’ for the International Health Exhibition.
