Charles Locke Eastlake (1836-1906)
Born in Plymouth he was articled to Phillip Charles Hardwick, despite his training he became the secretary of RIBA from 1866 to 1877 and was the keeper of the National Gallery from 1878 to 1898.
In 1868 he published the influential Hints on Household Taste, originally written as a series of magazine articles.

He designed wallpapers for Jeffrey & Co, fabrics for Cowlishaw and Nicol & Co also jewellery for Howell, James & Co. Later editions of Hints show his furniture designs as executed by Jackson & Graham and metal work by Benham & Froud.
1872 saw him publish the ambitious History of Gothic Revival in England.
From
